Message from Our President:
Dear NUCA of DC Member and Prospective Members:
It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the President of NUCA of DC. As the chapter enters its fifth year of operation, I am looking forward to continuing the momentum that has been building over the past four years. I am excited and looking forward to leading the association and working with all of you as we work to strengthen our relationships with the City Council, DDOT and utility owners
I would like to thank Dan Buckley for his leadership and the numerous accomplishments we had during his term as President. I would also like to thank Brian Mattingly of Goldin and Stafford for his service on the Board of Directors for the past two years. The Executive Committee welcomes our new Treasurer, Kevin Joy of B. Frank Joy and our new Treasurer, Jamie Doll of Corinthian Contractors as they join Mike Rounds, Vice President of Senate Asphalt, Dan Buckley and me.
I know from talking with many of you that the DC construction industry has started the year off well and so has NUCA of DC. The events committee put together some great events like the Supplier Showcase where our associate members were able to show off their products and services. We also had a great networking event and our first ever beer tasting and tour at Hellbender Brewery.
The Safety Committee organized a meeting with the OSHA’s new Regional Administrator, Richard Mendelson. We discussed topics like the changes to the Confined Space requirements, the new Silica Rule and the increase of penalties effective in August.
In an effort to strengthen our relationship with DDOT, I and several contractor representatives recently held our first meeting with Mr. Leif Dormsjo, Director of DDOT. He committed to posting upcoming construction projects on the DDOT website and soon they will be posting projects to be designed. We will link to these postings on our website in order to keep NUCA members informed on what’s to come from DDOT. Other topics of discussion included permits, steel plate rates and steel plate alternatives – focusing on the best developments for our members.
I know many of you have been waiting with bated breath to use the John Deere equipment simulator that you’ve heard so much about. Well, shortly we will be launching the NUCA of DC/John Deere Equipment Simulator Training program. This is an awesome member benefit to all contractors who are looking to train new operators or verify the skills of existing operators and potential new-hires. The training program will enable NUCA of DC members to expand their pool of trained operators in a safe and controlled environment; a huge value.
We will also be launching a formal “BUY NUCA” promotional campaign in June. This is a formal program to encourage all members to do business with other members, complete with some special incentives offered by various member companies – another great value of your membership!
I encourage you all to participate in NUCA’s Washington Summit on May 23 – 26. You can join the other NUCA chapters from around the country in a legislative briefing and Federal Issues Conference before spending a day on the Hill lobbying for those bills important to our industry. Getting involved with the legislative process and advocating for support on issues of key concern to NUCA members is one of the most important things we do.
I mentioned a few committees earlier. Our committees are the soul of our great association and while each of them do a great job; they could all use some additional help. So if you want to get the most out of your membership, be an active part of a committee. This where you really get to know fellow members; all of the committee meeting schedules are on our website.
I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event. Please let me know if there is anything I can do help you get the most out of your membership.
